A state judge sentenced 49-year-old James E. Canda of Billings for the robbery of Valley Federal Credit Union.

Authorities say a masked man entered the business on May 2, struggled with an employee and fled with a bag of money. Police arrested Canda a short time later. In September he pleaded guilty to robbery.

Authorities say the robber fled with $3,520. Police recovered $1,020 from a trash bin and Canda was carrying $550 when arrested. Authorities speculate the other money fell from the bag, tossed in the trash bin as Canda was pursued.

Besides facing prison, he must pay about $2,000 in restitution.
