Located 16 miles south of Chinook on Highway 240 the Bear Paw Battlefield commemorates the surrender the Nez Perce to the U.S. Army in 1877, in which Chief Joseph gave his immortal speech: “From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.” The battlefield honors all those who fought and died in the Nez Perce War of 1877.
Managed by the National Park Service, the battlefield is a unit of the Nez Perce National Historical Park. Open year-round during daylight hours. Self-guided 1 ¼ mile interpretive trail.
